The 10 Lessons ‘Breaking Bad’ Taught Us About Running A Business

The 10 Lessons ‘Breaking Bad’ Taught Us About Running A BusinessFortunately for us, the last episode of “Breaking Bad” was nothing short of amazing. I mean what a way to end the show! Unfortunately for us, it was the last episode of one of our favorite shows. Now what are we left to watch? All good things must come to an end and this is just one of those shows that will live on forever.
Its impression on society will be around for years to come as there are many things we can take away from such a show. It’s interesting to see how circumstances can push people’s lives in a direction they never originally thought for themselves. Walter White never planned on becoming a great meth dealer but his circumstances gave him no recourse.
Jesse Pinkman and Walter were both entrepreneurs in their respective ways. When it comes to running a business, there are a lot of things that we have learned from the show. Their hard work and dedication can be can be matched by few and it is what differentiated them. Here are the business lessons we learned from “Breaking Bad.”

There is nothing more important than being passionate about what you do.

Walter-White-the-ChemistSports Glutton

Walter was a very intelligent man with a passion for chemistry. It just came naturally to him and he was extremely good at what he was doing. When you are passionate about something, you enjoy working in such a field. This allows you to be more willing to put in the hours necessary to accomplish what you set out for yourself.

Build a strong team, no one ever made it on their own.

tumblr_msv8j1ctmN1qlatf4o1_1280Sourcefed

To run a business, it takes an immense amount of work and dedication. As the dynamic meth duo showed us, nothing is impossible without having the right people around you. The reason Walter and Jesse were successful is that they worked well together. Taking the full responsibility of running a business upon yourself is a huge responsibility.
Divide up the work and hold each other accountable, these two worked well together because they each expected so much out of each other and pushed themselves in order to get things done.

Develop a skill in the field you are passionate about.

tumblr_m4encyQZPR1qzzh6gBright Wall Dark Room

In every field, you must develop a certain skill that will differentiate you from other people. Walter was a great chemist and his ability to come up with the recipe for an amazing product was his unique skill. This in turn made him a marketable product that was able to earn him a lot of money. Jesse, on the other hand, was a great sales man. He had the right network and was able to use it in a way that was beneficial to him.

Your network is just as important as your product.

breaking-bad-all-charactersMovies, Films, Motion Pictures

Now we all know that Walter would have never been able to push his product to the right people if it weren’t for Jesse. His ability to network and build connections was very crucial to their success. Walter can’t go around selling two pounds of meth to just anyone, he needed the right people. Your network it is a great way to build a clientele base, which will, in turn, allow you to bring your business to the next level.

Understand what success means to you and what you want to achieve.

tumblr_mqifp8zV161syxf23o1_500

Have a goal that you want to achieve and work towards it. No one was able to get what they wanted without first knowing what they were trying to get out of the experience. In any endeavor, you will need direction. Walter and Jesse had an idea of how much money they wanted to make, they may have not originally envisioned their great success, but at least they knew what they were working for.

Negotiate, it’s the only way you’ll get what you want.

tumblr_m1ontoGQZW1qg14emo1_500

Know what you are trying to get out of a deal and stick to your budget. Everything comes at a price, how you manage to control your profit margins will determine your success. Walter and Jesse both were good at negotiating, they understood what was a reasonable profit in order for them to go along with the transaction.

Have a plan, stick to it.

Breaking-Bad-900x600Loco Mag

There is no particular road map that guarantees success, however there are routes you can take in order to achieve success. Build a system that works, adjust as necessary, but be sure to stick to the core of the plan. Walter and Jesse knew what was required of each of them.
Although their plan varied at times, they had the core down; make their product, transport it to the right person, exchange their product for cash and get out. Nothing more nothing less. By sticking to the plan, Jesse and Walter were able to grow and develop their business, Their plan kept them on track and it created a system that was efficient and effective.

You can’t expect things to be easy, everything will come with its own headaches and obstacles.

Breaking-Bad-Background-ImagesWallpager

Your life as an entrepreneur will come with many obstacles and difficulties, as nothing in life is a given. If things are coming to you easily then either you’ve lucked out or you’re not doing things the right way.
Each industry comes with its own difficulties and obstacles, it’s just part of the game. Jesse and Walter dealt with a lot of issues on their way to building their business. It affected their normal lives as well, but it was a choice they made while fully understanding the repercussions of their actions.

Be patient with people you don’t relate to, it is essential.

breaking-bad-buyout-bryan-cranstonCollider

Not every business transaction you partake in will be your favorite one, having to deal with people you don’t like just comes with the territory. You will be annoyed with some of your clients and, at times, some of them will be difficult to deal with. However, as we learned from Jesse and Walter if a client is ordering consistently and paying on time, you will have to put your social preferences to the side.
There’s no need for a person’s personality to get in the way of making money. There will be plenty of people you can’t stand along the way, but it’s your job to keep your cool because business is business.

Get it done at all costs.

1683535-inline-i-3-anna-gunn-reflects-on-what-it-was-like-to-play-walter-whites-wife-on-breaking-badFasto Create

Walter and Jesse had a knack for making things happen, even in high pressure situations they were able to beat out the obstacles and provide their services. For example, when there wasn’t enough Sudafed, Walter used another chemical in order to make his product. There was nothing these guys didn’t do to make sure they were providing their client with the best.
We all know nothing is going to come easy and there will be a few obstacles along the road, it’s the ability to stay focused on the end goal and get it done no matter what that will differentiate a businessman from the rest of the crowd. Walter and Jesse not only provided a great product, but they made sure their product reached their customers hands without issues.

Bonus: You’re going to need a little luck.

walter-white-highfive

No one ever made it on their own and without luck. Although every successful person would love to take all the credit for their success, they can’t. Luck plays a role in many people’s business ventures. You need a little bit of luck to get you through the rough times. Walter and Jesse found themselves in a few tight situations throughout the show and if it weren’t for luck, they wouldn’t have been able to get out of these predicaments.

How ‘Breaking Bad’ Was Defined By Our Generation

How ‘Breaking Bad’ Was Defined By Our GenerationA down and out teacher. A high school drop out. A parched economy. A rising drug issue. At this point and time, this could be anywhere. But, in actuality, this is the world of “Breaking Bad.” It’s a show that flew under the radar almost six years ago, following in the vain of another eye opening drama, “Traffic.”
There has been much change in the world we inhabit, from major cities going bankrupt, to the legalization of marijuana. Degrees have slowly lost meaning, and even entry-level jobs mysteriously need years of experience. With our hands filled with every conflict but our own, millions of houses are being foreclosed, yielding new ways for families to stay afloat in a drowning market.
Our entertainment is generally a reflection of the times we live in, from the propaganda during World War II, to the Eastern European villains of the Cold War. But, we now face a whole other problem: ourselves. “Breaking Bad” hit us on all levels. It showed how someone could break bad just to support his family.
It gave us people we can all relate to, struggling in situations that are out of their hands. The mirrored lives they lived gave us an understanding of the drug issue plaguing most of middle America, right down to local dealers feeding off of the weak and lost. It wasn’t about a coked up Cuban millionaire, but a washed up chemist, dealing with terminal cancer, a pregnant wife, and a disabled teenager. We were given an inside look at the failures of our healthcare system that pile merciless bills on folks who can’t afford it, and in response, what a man would do to keep his family safe.
If you dropped the pilot anywhere in time, the show would never have been picked up. From the raucous 60s to the ‘technological’ 90s, there was no room for anything as raw as what Vince Gilligan brought to us through 62 episodes. We delved into the health care debate, drug and gun reform, the middle class, and even micro politics. These are real life issues that people watching can grimace and relate to. We are all behind a payment on some credit card, struggle with school loans, and worry about where our healthcare will be for our future kids.
This generation, here, is the f*cked up generation. Divorce is commonplace, debt is a given, and entertainment is mind rotting. Couple that with no jobs, rising school costs, and a highly competitive job market; Washington, we have a problem. And for some, seeing the lowest point someone can hit flicks a switch on the inside, making whatever that person is going through that much more interesting.
This wasn’t fodder, filled to the brim with plastic boobs, or a so-called ‘reality.’ This was something geared towards us, right from inception. Maybe, for the rest of us, we will never get to that extreme (I hope not; I cannot make drugs for sh*t), but we get it. Gilligan got it, too. This show will never be the voice of our generation, but you can sure bet we defined it. And that’s a claim to be proud of.

For just $65, you could buy 24 karat gold rolling papers and become the fanciest stoner on the planet. Shine Papers, the company behind the glitz and glam, created a line of rolling papers made of an edible gold leaf.
In terms of the health risks behind inhaling small, gold particles, the papers haven’t yet been tested. Shine Papers was started by Dave D., a man who didn’t want to reveal his last name toABC News.

This Short Film Will Blow Your Mind And Leave You Speechless (Video)

This video… well, it’s sort of inexplicable.
To be more accurate, it’s absolutely mind-blowing. The short film entitled “Box” shows a man moving around a screen that images are projected on to, creating an illusion of a three-dimensional box.
“Box explores the synthesis of real and digital space through projection-mapping onto moving surfaces. The short film documents a live performance, captured entirely in camera,” reads the video’s description.
The effects are breathtaking beyond belief, and the video has us puzzled, intrigued, and flabbergasted.
Check out the incredible short film below!

What The Soundtrack To James Cameron’s New ‘Gravity’ Film Should Really Be (Video)

James Cameron‘s new blockbuster with Sandra Bullock and George Clooney has attracted a lot of hype and anticipation. Cameron calls the project “the best space film ever done.”
So what better way to make light of the most intense space movie to come out, than with a hilarious Offical Comedy parody of the film? All the songs that could ever be about space, gravity and just being alone outside the Earth’s atmosphere are here. It kind of makes you want to see the movie…for different reasons than the trailer intends.
Finally a reason to listen to John Mayer‘s “Gravity” without looking like a pussy.

How The Baby Boomers F*cked Us Out Of Social Security

How The Baby Boomers F*cked Us Out Of Social Security
We know that, as a generation, we have our work cut out for us. We have the most expensive education costs, the most national debt, one of the most unwelcoming job markets in U.S. history, an increasing divide between the top income brackets and the rest of the country, and an aging cohort that needs our support.
Thank goodness that we can rest easy knowing that after we put in 40 some years of work and paying our dues, we will be able to retire at age 65 and have the government take care of us.
Oh wait, what’s this? That won’t happen?
Times are changing, and the many changes are putting pressure on the institution that is supposed to care for us as we grow old: the Social Security Administration. Social Security works as a pay as you go system; this means that a tax on both employers and workers is put into the Social Security Trust Fund, which is responsible for paying out retirees’ benefits. Over the course of 70 years, the Trust Fund has taken in $13.8 trillion in taxes and is giving out $11.3 trillion in payments, for a total surplus of $2.7 trillion as of 2009 (Q25 & Q26).
If Social Security is so strong, having incurred yearly deficits only 11 times (4 times between ‘59-’65 and all of ‘75-’81), then why am I worried? What is the problem?
The percentage of the population aged 65+ has steadily grown since Social Security was established, from 6.8% in 1940 to 13% in 2010, and the amount between the ages 45-64 grew from 19.8% to 26.4% over the same span. Life expectancy has slowly, but steadily increased, such that people reaching 65 in 1990 live an average 5 years longer than their 1950 counterparts.
Never before have so few workers supported so many retirees, as compared to right now. And it’s getting worse. The Baby Boomers are still retiring, and birthrates still declining, meaning that the ratio of workers to dependents will continue to decrease. In 1950, there were 16.5 workers per retiree, as compared to 2.8 in 2012.
The Social Security Administration intermediate projection suggests that it will decrease to 2:1 workers to retirees, and hover there indefinitely. The high cost estimation suggests it could go as low as 2 retirees for every 3 workers by 2070.
USpop2010.svgWikipedia
The population distribution (above embedded chart) used to look more like a pyramid, a small peak with a broadening base, but improvements in healthcare and medicine have saved many lives from premature death, a success which inadvertently put a greater burden on the Social Security system. Additionally, elderly people have the most health complications, often requiring both the most expensive and the most frequent medical procedures, while living on a fixed income, in order to stave off death for a few more years.
Social Security has tried to compensate for this shift in population distribution by increasing the Social Security tax. What was a 1% tax on both worker and employer in 1950 has become 7.5% on each party today, totals that went from 2% to 15% of income.
These changes have been absolutely ineffective, a toddler’s sandcastle fighting against the incoming ocean tide. The 2013 Annual Report by the Social Security Trustees presented this:
“The combined trust fund reserves are still growing and will continue to do so through 2020. Beginning with 2021, the cost of the program is projected to exceed income.”
This means that the SS tax will cover expenses until 2020 (with the help of increasing the SS tax to 8.5% on both worker and employer), at which point costs will exceed income and the interest earned by investing the surplus. The growing deficit will be filled by spending the surplus reserves, fulfilling all payment obligations until 2033 when the reserves ($2.7 trillion as of ’09) run out.
Going forward from 2033, the Social Security tax is expected to cover 75% of Social Security commitments, with no more reserves to call on and legislation in progress to address this issue. The 25% deficit is expected to last through the end of the 75-year projection the SS administration does every year, meaning that with no changes to Social Security, there will be a 25% operating deficit all the way through 2088.
In 2033, when the Trust Reserve runs out, I’ll be 42. By the time I am 65, it will be 2056, and Social Security will have been running a 25% debt for 23 years. At the 2012 budget levels ($786 billion), that’s the equivalent of $196,500,000,000 in debt per year for 23 years. Except that the budget will be way higher than $786 billion, and so will the deficit.
So what can we expect to happen?
We will be the first generation to pay the increased tax rates and also the first generation to retire at the new, later age and to receive fewer benefits.
Before we start saving for retirement, there’s that whole college degree thing we have to pay off. Americans have approximately $900 billion in outstanding college loans, according to the Federal Reserve bank. Not to mention, it’s harder than ever for recent college graduates to get a job. The housing equity collapse of 2009 means we won’t be depending on our house to be a nest egg either.
So for one thing, we can sure as hell plan on not retiring at age 65. That was a stupid idea anyway.
SS_Benefits
We can expect the retiring age to rise, potentially as high as 70, and for retirement benefits to decrease. This increases the number of years workers will contribute to the SS Fund while also lessening the number of people who will receive benefits.
Not only are tax rates going to increase while we are at our peak earning age/years, but the Social Security taxable income cap of $106,000 is certain to be raised as well.
Frankly, I think these changes are reasonable. I just wish they had been enacted earlier so that the burden of the SS deficit could be spread across more people, lightening the load per person while also making the generation that pushes SS into the deficit could contribute more to the Trust before they retire.
It is also possible that Social Security will be eliminated entirely during our working careers and replaced with a privatized system. The privatization of Social Security is a popular platform, one that Romney campaigned behind. Once fully implemented it would work well, with people receiving benefits from what they payed in, increasing personal responsibility while still providing some government assistance and oversight.
It would work once implemented, but would have to be phased in over very long period in order to minimize the burden. I don’t want to be working in that period, because not only would I be saving for my own retirement, but I would additionally be making payments to support the elder generation who did not have private accounts set up for them in their working careers.
What can we do?
Act as if you are the only person planning for your future. Because face it, you might be. Do some research. One of my economics professors told me that his biggest piece of advice is to start saving for retirement right away. Look at the interest rates on your loans! It is likely that the interest rate on your loans are less than those you could earn investing in safe bets such as CDs or U.S. Bonds.

Did you know that Coca-Cola was initially developed by pharmacists to help cure…

Did you know that Coca-Cola initially was advertised as a remedy for headaches? The famous beverage has been created in 1886 by a pharmacist from Atlanta named John Pemberton who claimed his product could be a successful treat for headache. It is a well known fact that caffeine is one of the main ingredients of Coca-Cola. Scientists believe that caffeine restricts the blood flow to the dilated vessels in the head which reduces pain.

cocacolapharmacist
However, according to numerous reports excessive amounts of caffeine could actually cause headaches instead of cure it. That is why the Coca-Cola recipe was altered and instead of caffeine and cocaine now it uses coca leaf extract. As a result, nowadays the healing properties of the Coke are significantly reduced.
Back in the 19th century the Coke syrup was sold in small dosages and was widely used as a cure for nausea and indigestion. Pemberton also claimed his beverage is an effective remedy for morphine addiction and impotency as well.

Did you know that workers at Ground Zero found an 18th century wooden ship underneath the WTC and…

We are all familiar with the tragic story of World Trade Center in New York and the destructive attacks from 2001. The two towers collapsed after two hijacked planes crushed into them killing thousands of people and injuring many more. It’s a tragedy that we will remember for a long time. President Bush and Mayor Giuliani promised the site will be rebuilt and soon after clearing of debris the construction works began. Since then Ground Zero is a name used to define the site of the World Trade Center after the attacks.

In 2010 builders working at Ground Zero came upon an interesting archaeological finding – a wooden ship. Scientists dated it to the 18th century. The nearly 200-year-old boat is 9.8 meters long. Experts think it had been dump at this place in around 1810′s along with wooden beams. They suggest the boat was intentionally sunk in order to become part of the foundations of a new pier.

Did you know that James Payne was suffering from liver…

James Payne was a 24 years old man who suffered from live cancer. His favorite video game was “Total War”. During the fight against cancer one of his wishes was visiting the game studios. He visited the studios, met some of the developers and spent some time with them talking about the game, life and so on. Later on James lost the battle, so one of the developers (the one that spent most time with him) suggested to “immortalize” him in the new game. The director approved and in Total War: Rome II you can see James as the main character. After all he will live his adventures.1044135_395489950560901_1352465693_n (1)

Did You Know That Buses Don’t Need Seat Belts Because, When Inside…

Have you ever wondered why school, highway and city buses don’t have seatbelts? The answer is simple – they don’t need them.
Since buses have high flooring and their seats are placed higher than those in other vehicles, in case of collision the damage would happen under the seating, thus keeping the passengers safe. School buses have closely placed seating with high backs, which are padded. In the event of an accident, child would be pushed forward to what seems like an early version of the airbag. This also applies for highway buses. The padded backs and the elevated floors keep the passengers safe.

.buses

Yet city buses don’t have such high floor plans and the distance between the seats is wider. However, placing seatbelts would require more space, which would mean less seats. And since many passengers are standing while traveling with city buses, seatbelts wouldn’t do much good. Not only that, placing seatbelts would cost between $8,000 and 15,000 for each bus!
Nevertheless, all buses include a seatbelt for the driver to secure him during the drive in case any impact.

Did you know that when you die, you can have your ashes made into a rock and

Nowadays you could reincarnate into a coral after you die.

coral memorial

Apart from being a part of the underwater environment, corals service as beautiful decorations in our homes and offices. Their various species have also been used in jewelry and souvenir making.
Now imagine that you could contribute to the marine ecosystem after your death. How can you do that? Well, if you’re being cremated you can have your ashes made into a rock. This rock will become the base of an “eternal memorial reef”, which will help coral reefs bloom.
Your ashes will be made into a mold, which is later made into a reef ball that can even be decorated. These reef balls are placed on the bottom of the ocean so they can provide the sea life with better living conditions. The family of the cremated person is offered the chance to dive underwater whenever they wish and admire the sea life that grows from their loved ones’ remains.
