Science and technology are busy making progress in more than just one aspect: war equipment, medical sciences and alternate energy sources are just a few highlights among the countless things which are being invented and brought to the market everyday. In light of such research, a Tunisian start-up company named Saphon Energy has brought a new concept to the market.  The key idea here is to create a turbine, windless, for generating electricity from the wind. Uh, wait, a windless turbine to create energy from the wind? Yeah, a bit confusing, but stay with us and see the marvelous idea that the company has to offer. The particular turbine’s design is inspired from the sails of ship by the way.

Secondly, they occupy much more space, are a contributor to noise pollution and they are murderers of birds. That coupled with the search of alternative methods for creating electricity has brought to us this new invention by the Saphon Energy. Their wind turbine has been patented and is known as ‘Zero Blade Technology’. Let’s put our science hats on; the system is designed so that it traps wind in a to and fro motion which via moving pistons is transformed into mechanical energy. The result is hydraulic pressure which is the juice for hydraulic motor and a generator which converts it into electricity. The excess electricity being produced is stored into a hydraulic device that can accumulate electricity and discharge it later. The Inventor, Anus Aouini, said; ‘This is not the first bladeless wind turbine, but we thought outside the box: the initial idea came from sails — the only human system that can capture and convert the bulk of the wind’s power into mechanical energy…Our second generation prototype is 2.3 times more efficient, and costs nearly half the price of [modern wind turbines]. It discards the most expensive components in a traditional wind turbine, which are the blades, hub and gearbox.’

In fact, they have gone to the extent claiming that their invention is efficient enough to exceed the Betz limit of Betz’s law.Zero Blade Technology Saphon Energy 2In layman’s terms; Betz’s Law states the following; ‘There is no wind turbine which is capable of harnessing more than 59.3 % percent of wind’s kinetic energy.’ The Zero Blade Technology beats that; welcome to the future!

High Strength 3D Printed Bone Technology Now A Reality

Artificial bone printing has also been made possible by experts at MIT. It is made of collagen protein, elastic in nature and hydroxyapatite minerals that give it the strength thus is making it flexible for movement, yet 22 times as strong as its constituent materials. The components are so well blended that they are perfect to support heavy loads.
This research has been carried out by Markus Buehler MIT civil engineering professor and his team. He has been working on 3D printing techniques for quite some time and has worked with various polymers, synthetic materials, etc., and the geometric patterns are also inspired from the naturally occurring materials like real bones or nacre with some additions to the design. His work has been published in Advance Functional Materials.
3-d-printing-of-artificial-bone3What came out from the research, were three materials; first simulated mineral calcite, second replicated nacre and third a composite design that was assembled to enhance the human bone structure.
After the new bone was created out of the new materials, multiple trials and tests were carried out on it to check  its strength. The result showed that the new invention was highly resistant to fractures and thus could withhold great amount of stress.

We can design our own, which may perform even better than the ones that already exist.” It is still unlikely that the 3D printed bone will be out in the market anytime soon, but we cannot ignore or underscore the significance it has brought to the field of 3D printing. Let’s hope such development keeps moving forward and we are able to find even better and efficient alternates to the already existing materials.

Zonda Releases Its Final Supercar ; Zonda Revolución

The world is continually improving; enhancing designs and making improvements. Engineers are often faced with tasks like how to make things better and more efficient. Such is the case with car industry as well! It’s been fourteen long years since first Zonda SuperCar was presented to the world. During these fourteen years, many improvements have been made and all that has led to this final act;  The Pagani Zonda Revolucion. The famous car’s production is being discontinued by Pagani with this one last ace up the sleeve of Horatio Pagani, the car designer.
Zonda Revolución 4This last model is expected to have long lasting impression on the world. A total of 23 improved models of Zonda cars have been made ever since its first supercar debut in 1999. Pagani’s cars are known to walk a very thin line between track and street. This final episode, the last piece, lives up to its predecessors’ fame. Zonda Revolución, according to Pagani, is a ‘car designed to amaze both on the track and in a car collection’. Revolución will be generating an Hp of 800, thanks to the 6.0 L Mercedes AMG V12 engine. Performance details have yet not been released, but we sincerely hope that it will beat its predecessor’s record of 0-62 Mph in 2.7 seconds and will surpass Zonda R as far as the performance goes.
Zonda Revolución 3Revolución will come in artistically sculpted carbon fiber body with a carbon-titanium monocoque. A perfect complement to its powerful engine, don’t you think? However, what we find most amazing is its active aerodynamics system which can be modified by the driver by push of a button! The Drag Reduction System (DRS) can be used to increase the down force on higher speeds and the car’s smart system will calculate correct angle for the car’s stabilizers so that performance is never in jeopardy and your car is in control. What more can you ask of your car?

Scientists Discover A New Layer In Human Eye

What is so fascinating about science? It’s always progressing towards something new and what is considered top notch today will be outdated in a few years. However, a discovery in human anatomy is something we weren’t expecting to take place but it did! As it happens, the latest discovery about human anatomy is only 15 microns thick, but contrary to its thickness, this discovery is bound to have a huge impact on medical science. For starters, this discovery will result in making eye surgery much simpler and safer as compared to the present risks associated with eye surgery. The discoverer of this new found layer is Professor Harminder Dua  at the University of Nottingham.
Dua’s layerHe found a new layer present in the human cornea and has named it after him; Dua’s layer. This particular layer lies at the back of the cornea, the same cornea which was believed to have only five layers previously. The methodology in finding out this layer included Dua injecting air into the cornea and making use of an electron microscope to completely analyze each layer by scanning it. The eyes used for this research were, of course, the ones that had been donated for such research purposes. How many of you have heard about corneal hydrops? It is this disorder which allows for the building up of fluid in the cornea. The research team believes that a tear in Dua’s layer is the cause for this disorder.
Dua’s layer 2The team also believes that the finding of this new layer will drastically improve the surgery outcomes related to corneal grafts and transplants. Professor Dua had the following to say regarding the new discovery; ‘This is a major discovery that will mean that ophthalmology textbooks will literally need to be re-written. From a clinical perspective, there are many diseases that affect the back of the cornea which clinicians across the world are already beginning to relate to the presence, absence or tear in this layer.’ Check out the videos below!
